The complaint of “dizziness” is common and the differential diagnosis ranges from benign to life threatening. A cost-effective approach to the evaluation of this complaint, as well as the treatment and disposition options, will be reviewed. The presenter will identify how to distinguish between peripheral and central causes of vertigo and dizziness. Several diagnostic tests and therapeutic maneuvers, including the Epley maneuver, will be demonstrated. Turn frustration with this condition to “patient satisfaction.”

  • Describe a systematic approach to the evaluation and disposition of patients with dizziness.
  • Identify treatment options for vertigo and dizziness to improve patient outcomes.
  • Discuss the use of history and examination to distinguish between the most common peripheral causes of vertigo in order to increase efficiency and improve outcomes.
  • Describe the distinction between peripheral and central vertigo in order to maximize patient safety and not miss cerebellar stroke.
